Bio
George McMullen:
Veteran of the L.A. jazz and commercial recording scene currently residing in New York City, George McMullen has been a popular trombonist for over twenty years. Better known for his commercial activity, he is also respected for his deep artistic involvement and solo capabilities, especially in the area of improvisation where he is equally at home in traditional harmonic forms as well as the more free conceptual frameworks of some modern composers and the avant garde. His past work includes a long list of recording accomplishments in Music, Film, TV, and commercial jingles. He has also played live and toured with an astonishing variety of musicians and artists in jazz, rock, R&B, Latin pop, and Latin jazz. As well, he has done a variety of live TV including celebrity award shows, and appearances on all of the major late night and early morning talk shows. During his tenure as Musical Director for the Brian Setzer Orchestra, he was honored to participate in six grammy nominated performances, including three grammy winners, two for best instrumental, and one for best performance by a group. Some of the other artists George works with, or has worked with in the past include Doc Severinsen and the (old) Tonight Show Orchestra, James Newton, The Luckman Jazz Orchestra, Charlie Haden, George Lewis, The Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra, Vinny Golia, Don Henley, Oingo Boingo, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Tom Waits, Paul Anka, Bobby Caldwell, and the list continues.

About Line Drawings Vol's. 1 & 2:

If you enjoy the sounds of trombone, bass clarinet, saxes and flutes there's a lot to like about these albums. All tracks are free improvised duets, capturing the instruments close up and beautifully recorded in a rather reverberant space. The result is often captivating, the players listening closely and developing each other's ideas with a range of tone colours and contrasts. Pieces range in length from two to six minutes and each features a different combination of instruments.
George McMullen plays trombone and flute; his pedigree includes Grammy awards as musical director of the Brian Setzer orchestra and work with Charlie Haden, Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder. Vinny Golia plays saxophones, bass clarinet, alto flute and G piccolo; he is a well established composer and band leader. Both have been active in the LA and New York free improvisation scenes and seem to have an almost telepathic understanding.
These two CDs were both recorded on 19th August 2015 and offer a masterclass in lyrical free playing whilst not forgetting to visit the frontiers of noise. Golia's choice of saxophones here is either baritone, soprano or sopranino and he often chooses to play breathy rhythms or overtones while McMullen is exploring melodic ideas or growling with a variety of mutes. The titles are mostly as abstract as the pieces, apart from the mysterious "Portrait of Vincent Price" which sounds nothing like the Vincent Price I'm thinking of!

About Boomerang:

“It [Boomerang] is a continuously lucid invention, taken to the highest degree in improvised pieces, all harmonically complex. They are characterized by unpredictable meters, structurally contrasted with sudden thematic breaks. Sudden accelerations and accelerations do the rest, building an enveloping plot that uses compositions of suspended beauty. This CD is therefore one of the most exciting episodes of the most recent jazz discography.”
 - Mauricio Zerbo, All About Jazz

“It’s abundantly clear from the first bar that these three gents are deeply attuned to one another, with an enticing, finger-snapping bounce that grabbed me right away.”
 - Stu Kremsky, Mr. Stu's Record Room

“It is a joy to listen to the trombone as
played by McMullen in the company of two dedicated mates.”
- Vital Weekly.net

“McMullen's hearty mastery is strikingly beautiful.”
